The Association of Spanish Underwriting Agencies (ASASE) participated on June 10th in the European MGA Summit 2025 organized by The Insurer, representing the Spanish market in one of the most important events of the sector at European level.
During the presentation entitled “MGA Market Evolution in the Netherlands and across Europe”, Dario Spata, president of ASASE, intervened together with Valentina Visser, representative of the Dutch association NVGA, in a conversation moderated by William Pitt (Lexicon Associates). ASASE and NVGA were the only two associations of MGA’s invited to speak at the congress, showing the curiosity aroused by the Spanish market in Europe.

Dario Spata’s speech highlighted the evolution of the Spanish market, underlining that, although it is a young ecosystem – with MGAs born since 2006 – it already has almost 100 agencies, many of them independent. He also claimed the role of technology as a springboard to compete with large operators and the potential of MGAs to diversify and grow in areas such as auto, home and environmental responsibility.

During his participation, Dario explained that, unlike other European countries where many MGAs emerge backed by large investors or financial groups, in Spain many have been founded by professionals who decided to start up on their own, investing their own capital and believing in their project from scratch. In this context, he shared a reflection that connected with many attendees:
“Maybe what differentiates us as MGAs in Spain is that many of us do it with more romanticism than financing.”
For her part, Valentina Visser offered a vision of the Dutch market characterized by consolidation and the transfer of portfolios from traditional mediation to MGAs. She also underlined the growth in specialized niches and the need to look for new international capabilities. One of his most remarkable sentences was:
“What we see in the Netherlands is that more and more insurers transfer risks and coinsurance towards MGAs, especially in niches where standardization does not work.”
In addition, ASASE was the most represented community at the event, a clear reflection of the community cohesion created by the association.
ASASE would like to express special thanks to ANV, AB Coverholder de Aon, Ayax, Chance Underwriting, Dual Ibérica, Exsel, Helix Marine, Iberian Insurance Group, Myrtea Ibérica, Nuvu, Mayrit, Wiire, Weecover, AM Best and Plug Brokers for joining them in this great meeting.
The presence of ASASE at the European MGA Summit is a new step in the international visibility of Spanish underwriting agencies and in the dialogue with other European associations to build together the future of the MGA model in Europe.
