ASASE has just released the third episode of its second season (number 15 overall), which focuses on one of the most important figures in an underwriting agency: the underwriter.
Entitled “Between appetite and limit: the truth about underwriting,” the episode features Carol Fernandes, head of business development at Exsel and an underwriter specializing in cyber and property, who offers a practical, unfiltered view of how decisions are made at an underwriting agency.

During the conversation, the entire underwriting process is discussed, from the arrival of the application to the final decision, including early identification of alerts, management of non-standard risk, how the company’s referrals work, and the balance between technical criteria and commercial pressure.
The episode also delves into the impact of technology and AI on modern underwriting, as well as how agencies are trying to adapt their underwriting standards based on claims, market developments, and new emerging risks.
